"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but *actually* from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... time-y wimey... stuff."

Steven Moffat

"The universe is big, its vast and complicated, and ridiculous. And sometimes, very rarely, impossible things just happen and we call them miracles. And that's the theory. Nine hundred years, never seen one yet, but this would do me."

Steven Moffat

"Hitler: Thank you, whoever you are. I think you just saved my life. The Doctor: Believe me... It was an accident."

Steven Moffat

"The universe is big. It's vast and complicated and ridiculous. And sometimes—very rarely—impossible things just happen and we call them miracles."

"We saw some amazing actresses for this part. But when Karen came through the door, the game was up — she was funny, clever, gorgeous and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Steven Moffat

"As we all know, it is the proper duty of every British subject to come to the aid of the TARDIS."

Steven Moffat

"I think people have come to think a plot hole is something which isn’t explained on screen. A plot hole is actually something that can’t be explained."

Steven Moffat

"I want people to stop saying it. It is witless. It is appalling that in the face of people's genuine tragedy and traumatic loss, you trot out a stock phrase. What is the matter with you? "Thoughts and prayers?" How about you send money? I mean, how about you send some help? How about you do something? "Thoughts and prayers" is, "Nevermind. Oh, well." I thought that if I can just get it in there like, "Exterminate," as what evil robots say, then maybe people will stop saying that idiotic phrase."

Steven Moffat

"When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it'll never end. But however hard you try you can't run forever. Everybody knows that everybody dies and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think that all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark if he ever, for one moment, accepts it."

Steven Moffat

"Everybody knows that everybody dies. But not every day. Not today. Some days are special. Some days are so, so blessed. Some days, nobody dies at all. Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair and the Doctor comes to call, everybody lives."

Steven Moffat

"I'm not a psychopath, Anderson, I'm a high-functioning sociopath. Do your research."

Steven Moffat

"I don't think, generally speaking, people become writers because they were the really good, really cool, attractive kid in class. I'll be honest. This is our revenge for people who were much better looking and more popular than us. I was a bit like that, I suppose."

Steven Moffat

"The difference between a beautifully made failure and a beautifully made hit is who you've got playing the leads."

Steven Moffat

"I can't see what's wrong about assuming intelligence in your audience and what's bad news about being rewarded for assuming that."

Steven Moffat

"People don't really have a relationship with great writing or great production or great art direction or great direction. They just sort of admire it."

Steven Moffat

"When writing comedy, you have to have the confidence to believe that there is only one type of relationship in the world, and we are all having it, that all men behave in the same way and so do all women."

Steven Moffat

"This was supposed to be yesterday. I was sitting on the Cardiff/London train, supposedly about to write this very column, and realising something quite terrible. My head was entirely empty. A vast echoing void. Bigger on the inside, but with nothing in it. You could drop a pebble in my brain and wait for an hour to hear it land. No actually, you couldn't - that would be aggressive and unhelpful, so keep your damn pebbles to yourself."

Steven Moffat

"Good is good in the final hour, in the deepest pit – without hope, without witness, without reward. Virtue is only virtue in extremis."

Steven Moffat

"Come on, Rory! It isn't rocket science, it's just quantum physics!-The Doctor (Matt Smith)"

Steven Moffat

"The Doctor: Amazing. Nancy: What is? The Doctor: 1941. Right now, not very far from here, the German war machine is rolling up the map of Europe. Country after country, falling like dominoes. Nothing can stop it, nothing. Until one tiny, damp little island says "No. No, not here." A mouse in front of a lion. You're amazing, the lot of you. I don't know what you do to Hitler, but you frighten the hell out of me."

Steven Moffat

"I'd forgotten not all victories are about saving the universe."

Steven Moffat

"Madame Kovarian: The anger of a good man is not a problem. Good men have too many rules. The Doctor: Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many."

Steven Moffat

"Madge: I don't know why I keep shouting at them. The Doctor: Because every time you see them happy you remember how sad they're going to be. And it breaks your heart. Because what's the point in them being happy now if they're going to be sad later. The answer is, of course, because they are going to be sad later.~ The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe"
